ICE InsureTech, part of the Acturis Group, was founded in 2002, and provides award-winning Policy Administration and Claims Management software to the Insurance market. ICE InsureTech produces complex, enterprise software for our clients using cutting edge technologies, clients include The AA, John Lewis, Ticker and Hood Group.
We have over forty developers, split between our head office in Camberley, and offshore teams in Poland and Malaysia. As a graduate developer, you will be allocated to one of our six functional teams.
On a day to day basis, you will either be implementing new features for one of our products or debugging and fixing support tickets. Our work is team oriented and highly complex, so an ability to work in a team and communicate effectively with your colleagues is essential.
You will be mentored in both specific technologies and software development best practices and all of your code changes will be reviewed by senior developers. You will also be working with your colleagues to both suggest and implement ideas that help us continually improve our business, by doing activities such as contributing to our internal developer documentation, improving our build process or improving our automated test framework.
The Career Path
We have an open, honest and transparent approach throughout all our teams. We believe investing in our staff including training, development options and mentoring support.
ICE InsureTech has a formal review process which is designed to help maximise the potential of all employees. Each year your line manager will work with you to set objectives for the year which will include both activities that you will be doing for the business, and ways in which the business will help develop you. These objectives are reviewed on a regular basis, typically monthly, to ensure you are on track and have plenty of opportunity to both give and receive feedback. This is in addition to the regular feedback from senior developers as you carry out your daily work. As you progress in the company, you can choose to become more specialist in a particular area of technology or an area of one of our products. Alternatively, if you feel like a change, you could choose to move internally to a different development team.

Finally, if your life circumstances change, such as starting a family, we are happy to discuss changing your working hours, which could mean working fewer days each week, or working say 9:30-2:30, to fit in with school hours.
The successful candidates will have following attributes:
Have a 1st or 2:1 in computing or a scientific degree, with good programming experience, and good A levels.
Enjoy working in a team and have good communication skills.
Be pragmatic, and understand that we are an engineering business, with a focus on producing a working product, not an academic research organisation.
Be flexible. In business, priorities can change unexpectedly, and we all need to be adaptable.
Although software development has traditionally been male dominated, at ICE we work hard to advertise our roles to both men and women, and we also have a Women’s Focus group within the business, to help ensure all of our working practices work for everyone. 17% of our developers are female, which is slightly above the 13% of computing graduates who are female.
Many companies just allocate graduate developers to teams and ask them to learn on the job. At ICE, we don’t believe this is the most productive path. We start all our graduate developers with formal classroom training for the first three weeks with us. This covers a huge range of technologies and best practices, including:
IntelliJ, Maven, Gradle, TestNG, Mockito, Logging, Maven, Gradle, Design Patterns, Java Enterprise Edition and Web Applications, Spring, Google Web Toolkit (GWT), Containers, Databases and SQL, Hibernate, Git, OpenShift
After your initial training period is finished and you join a team, you are entitled to training time each week, so you can agree a learning topic with your manager. If you wish, we will support you in working towards an industry recognised qualification such as Java Certification.
